Pixelated Paintings

Painting I students start off learning value and the basics of color theory. They then begin a monochromatic self portrait in which they determine what their 5 separate values will be and use a grid system on a photograph to enlarge the image. For the pixelated still lifes, the boys selected a piece of food which we then pixelate using Photoshop. They grid their canvas out, paint and then supply a landscape background of their choosing, giving the finished work a surreal quality. We look at the work of George Seurat, Chuck Close, Rene Magritte and traditional old master still lifes for reference along the way.

Learning Value and Color

Monochromatic self-portraits emphasize value and creating consistent batches of color; pixelated still lifes teach accurate color mixing
